TGI FRIDAYS ROCKS THE HOUSE DOWN UNDER

Seven bartenders from TGI Fridays Asia Pacific are competing for the title of “World’s Best Bartender” at TGI Fridays Melbourne Central on Wednesday 26th November. The ‘Aussie’ contender, Harvey Suelan from TGI Fridays Marion located in South Australia, says he’s excited for this opportunity. Members of the public are encouraged to come along and view this unique global event.

TGI Fridays Director of Operations Amaresh Devanesen said, “This is a great opportunity for TGI Fridays Melbourne Central to host the Asia Pacific Regional Bar Championships.  We are growing here in Australia, having opened five new restaurants in the past 24 months. This event really puts Fridays on the Australian map.”

Contestants hail from China, Taiwan, Phillippines, India, Japan, Korea and Australia and are all flairing (tossing and flipping bottles) their way to the TGI Fridays World Bartender Championships. More than 1,000 TGI Fridays bartenders from around the world compete from restaurant level all the way to world level. Within this, there are 4 International divisional levels and 6 USA divisional levels. On average there are about 8 bartenders, who compete at each divisional level.

During the compulsory portion, the mixologists will show their mastery of bar mechanics, including technical knowledge, skill and accuracy. The speed round will test each competitor’s talent for making drinks during a specific time frame. The freestyle portion of the competition showcases the master competitors’ flair bartending skills — tossing, balancing, mixing and flipping cocktails and bottles in the air.

The World Bartender Championship event also includes a comprehensive skill test. Each contestant must know more than 200 alcoholic and non-alcoholic drink recipes, perform pour tests, answer specific questions on food items, wine bottle opening, pouring techniques, mixes and garnishes.  The bartenders will be judged in several categories, including accuracy, organization, cleanliness, working flair, guest hospitality and professionalism.

TGI Fridays prides itself on providing a fun and relaxed atmosphere, friendly service and original recipes. TGI Fridays is renowned for their World Famous Burgers, Buffalo wings, Jack Daniel’s Grill, Loaded Potato Skins and their legendary Happy Hour. All menu items are prepared fresh daily and cooked to order.

Kiwi to bring US chain to Auckland

A new waterfront boutique hotel and two American-style restaurants employing up to 150 people are planned for Auckland.

New Zealand-born multimillionaire Andrew Cox, 46, owns Queenstown’s award-winning Eichardt’s Private Hotel and has the Australasian franchise for restaurant chain TGI Friday’s.

He visited from Melbourne to look at leasing properties for the three new Auckland operations, saying the city presented him with big opportunities.

“New Zealand has absolutely turned a corner economically. It’s always been a destination but there’s a real vibe here now,” he said.

He is eyeing up three CBD waterfront sites for his new 15- to 20-room hotel which will be owned and operated by his Imperium Capital Group. That hotel will be of similar quality to Eichardt’s, he said.

“I’m looking at a CBD location and a suburban location for TGI Friday’s, so traditionally I locate them in shopping malls by cinemas or in free-standing CBD-type locations,” he said.

TGI Friday’s restaurants employ on average 80 people each and have annual revenue of about $6 million. Cox operates nine outlets in Australia but is expanding there too.

“We’re building one to two a year. The most recent is in the Macquarie Centre in North Ryde in Sydney.”

Cox is considering buying another hotel in Queenstown, saying the location had been extremely successful for Eichardt’s.

In Australia, he employs more than 700 people and Imperium – owned by founder Cox and his wife, Sarah – has annual revenue of more than A$100 million ($108.4 million).
